Eight Suites, One House: How La Chamana Was Designed

Eight Suites, One House: How La Chamana Was Designed

The phrase on the front of the house is an architecture of experience, which sounds like a slogan until you count the rooms and find that the bedrooms are the smaller half of it.

Eight suites, all en-suite. Eleven curated spaces. A group of sixteen has more places to be than it has people.

What eleven spaces are for

The eleven are specific, and the specificity is the point: a Mirror Temple, a Temazcal, a Library, a Wellness Spa with tinas, an Equilibrium Room, a theatre, a cinema, a gym, a dining room, a pool, a Pensatorium.

Read that list again and notice what is missing from it. No room appears twice under two names. Each was allowed to be one thing and stay it, which is a decision with a price: a room that does one thing sits empty for most of the day. A house that can afford eleven of them is making an argument about what it is for.

The Mirror Temple carries the largest share of that: sound healing, cacao, womb healing, yoga, breathwork and meditation, mat pilates. The gym is an old-school gym and says so. The Pensatorium is a room for thinking in, and whether that reads as a folly or as the most used room in the house depends entirely on who is staying.

The hammock in suite 7

There is a hammock in suite 7, hung over the window that faces the south cenote. The staff call it the seven-minute hammock, half seriously, because as far as anyone here has observed nobody has stayed awake in it longer than that once they lie down.

A house accumulates that kind of fact rather than planning it, and a nickname is the evidence that somebody has been paying attention for a while.

Seven in the evening

The beeswax candles in the dining room go on at seven. A woman in Felipe Carrillo Puerto makes them and brings them every fortnight, in boxes with her name written on the side by hand: Yolanda.

Candles are the cheapest thing in any room and among the easiest to get from a supplier who ships them by the crate. Somebody decided otherwise, every two weeks, for as long as this has been running.

One reservation

Eleven single-purpose rooms only make sense because the house goes out whole, to one group. A room that does one thing has to be worth it to the only people in the building.

That is the design decision underneath all the others, and everything above is downstream of it.
